The BBC’s murder-mystery, Shetland, returns in 2014 for a brand new 6-episode season featuring 3 2-part tales.
Series 2, Episode 1: Raven Black – Part 1
Broadcast Date: 9:00 PM, Tuesday 11 March, 2014 on BBC ONE
Old wounds are painfully reopened as DI Jimmy Perez and his team look into a past crime to solve the present-day murder of a young teenage girl.
The residents of Ravenswick are shocked when 17-year-old Catherine Ross is found murdered on a secluded beach.
With his cottage overlooking the crime scene, local recluse Magnus Bain is first to be questioned by Perez who is intrigued to discover Magnus had forged an unlikely friendship with the victim.
Perez and his team – DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh and Trainee DC Sandy Wilson – begin piecing together the hours leading up to Catherine’s death.
Perez questions Sally Henry, Catherine’s timid best friend whose mother – local schoolteacher Margaret Henry – makes no secret of her dislike for Catherine. He follows up with Hugo Scott, Catherine’s evidently obsessed teacher, and Alan Isbister, a local playboy philanderer, who admits to seeing Catherine at his party on Midsummer Night.
When Fiscal Procurator Rhona Kelly draws Perez’s attention to the unsolved case of Catriona Bruce, a seven-year-old girl who disappeared from the same village 19 years ago, Perez realises that the two girls even shared an address.
Although Magnus’s name crops up regularly throughout the investigation, Perez refuses to commit entirely to a link between the death of Catherine and Catriona’s disappearance – fearing a witch hunt around Magnus.
However, when the perfectly preserved body of a young girl is discovered in the peat bogs and a connection to Magnus arises, Perez is reluctantly forced to rethink his investigation.
Series 2, Episode 2: Raven Black – Part 2
Broadcast Date: 9:00 PM, Tuesday 18 March, 2014 on BBC ONE
Confident they’re closing in on the killer, Perez and his team discover murder victim Catherine Ross mysteriously went into hiding in the hours leading up to her death, as this first of three two-part stories concludes.
After 19 years missing, the discovery of seven-year-old Catriona Bruce’s body leads Perez to take Magnus Bain into custody for further questioning. At the station, Magnus quickly becomes distressed and attacks Perez.
While the team await Magnus’s psychological test results, Perez re-examines the evidence from Catherine’s murder case. After discovering Catherine mostly used her mobile phone to create photo portraits, Perez is frustrated to find her laptop has been wiped of all potential evidence.
Viewing haunting CCTV footage of Catherine clutching her bag at the bus station during her last hours, Perez wonders if its contents hide the secret of her demise.
When the post mortem results verify pathologist Cora McLean’s theory about Catriona’s death, Perez reports back to Catriona’s brother, Brian, who reveals Catriona had a secret hiding place at their old home – where Catherine also lived.
After digging through old police reports, Perez gleans why Magnus hates being in the police station, moving him to a place where he can feel safe. Magnus finally trusts Perez enough to reveal exactly what happened on the day Catriona disappeared: how the little girl saw something that greatly upset her – something that involved schoolteacher Margaret Henry.
Magnus also reveals that Catherine knew Catriona had a hiding place. And with another girl in imminent danger, the team finally find the last, vital, clue which leads them to the killer – and the biggest twist of all.
